Rectal Diazepam and Buccal Midazolam Refresher Course

This short course is for up to 12 people and is suitable for people who have already completed the one day Epilepsy Awareness, Buccal Midazolam and Rectal Diazepam Administration course and have gained experience in supporting people with epilepsy.

It is recognised that the administration of emergency rescue medication will not always be used on a regular basis in many settings, it is therefore considered good practice to attend a refresher course within 2 years of completing the full training.

  • Diazepam and Midazolam and uses in epilepsy
  • Preparations, brands, doses.
  • Side effects
  • Demonstration and Supervised Practice
  • Possible Difficulties and what to do
  • Consequences of overdose and action to take
  • Actions if administration Ineffective
  • Discussion/Questions and Answers

At the end of the course attendees will:-

  • Have up to date knowledge of epilepsy and its treatment
  • Be able to take appropriate first aid actions for seizures
  • Recognise the emergency situation and respond appropriately
  • Have the knowledge to administer rectal diazepam and buccal midazolam  safely in accordance with the individual care plan
  • Receive a certificate of attendance valid for two years
